It is impossible to describe Turkish cuisine in just a few words, as it is regarded one of the best in the world... However, let's try to pick out a few examples!
Kebab is well-known, but Turkey offers many subtle and surprising varieties. There are special wraps and dishes. Very nice is Iskender kebab, with hot dough, tomato sauce and tasteful yoghurt.
Maybe the most simple food is pide. That's an oblong piece of dough, filled with cheese, meat, or whatever you like. It is baked in traditional wood heated ovens. The fire is burning in the oven itself, giving the great taste. Pide restaurants are all over Turkey, good for a tasty, fast and very cheap meal.
Out of town there are many restaurants in all villages. You can lounge here on soft cushions at low tables. Many times, the menu is in Turkish only, but you're welcome to go to the kitchen, talk to the chef or the owner and point at whatever you like. Or let them surprise you...
A very special dish we like to recommend: Imam Baildi. That's stuffed aubergines with onions, tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and fresh herbs. The name comes from a legend: one day, when an imam tasted this food for the first time, he was so stunned by the taste that he fainted...
